With a mission to face the challenges of the 21st century digitally, University of Chittagong, Bangladesh took a bold decision of launching a highly technical department namely Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at the very eve of the millennium with a total of ten students of session 2001-2002. The department, established in 2001, however, was named as Computer Science at the very beginning of its inauguration but later it was renamed as mentioned above. Though it had to suffer a lot as far as the infrastructure is concerned, later it managed to adorn itself in a building of its own which is popularly known as IT building and located at the heart of the campus. Students of session 2004-2005 and successive batches are lucky enough to have their department’s own building as the previous batches had to attend their classes in Science and BBA faculty of the university.
Gradually the CU authority augmented the number of seats, giving a total of 50 meritorious and challenging students the opportunity to enroll in a session. With only three teachers at the start, now it is bestowed with 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 5 Assistant professor and 6 lecturers. Not to say, our highly skilled teachers have been helping us to face the challenges ahead in an efficient and effective manner. Without their sole contribution, the department could never be in today’s stage.
Along with 4-year B.Sc (Hons’) in CSE discipline, the department also provides Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Computer Science. The introduction of an M.Sc program of this discipline already also started with the earnest efforts of our teachers as well as authorities concerned. The newly introduced program, however, is believed to enhance research works which in turn will anchor glory to the name of our department.
